Today is the day! By now, you perhaps have seen one or two of these scooters zipping through the streets of Omaha. They are scooters you can rent through an app on your phone. According to their website, they charge a fixed rate to unlock one of their scooters and then there is a charge per minute that you ride it. When you are done. You use the app to lock the scooter, snap a picture of where you parked it, and Lime will do the rest!

It was actually on my trip to the Kentucky Derby last weekend that I first saw these things in action. Seems like a convenient way to get from point A to point B. However, being someone who commutes (occasionally) on my bicycle… I have some fears about how well this will work. I sound like my dad with what I am about to say… but renting one of these scooters isn’t a privilege… it’s a responsibility!

That responsibility is the one you have to look out for your own safety… because there isn’t another driver/biker/pedestrian that will. Believe me… motorists HATE to share the road with people on bicycles. By law… a bicycle cannot be driven on the sidewalk. They are supposed to share the road with other motorists. That being said… I break the law every time I ride my bike to work. On busier streets, I use the sidewalk. There have been too many close calls I have had with drivers not paying attention, or who are only looking out for larger vehicles. The amount of people who yell and scream and honk on their way by you is horrifically high number as well. SHARE THE ROAD PEOPLE. Yes, it goes both ways, and bicyclists need to share it with motorists. However, understand that on my bike I have a lawful right to being on the street… and now these scooters do too. Keep an eye out for them.
